how did this get made bloodsport

In fact, we explored Post Traumatic Stress in the play, but the term PTSD had not even been coined yet. That is not to say that the Tanaka name has no meaning. And then he said, "What the hell are we doing out here?" I mean, I didn't really see it myself, but I heard it from Grant later. I met this guy Sheldon Lettich, who had done a play called Tracers and we became friends. And they did. He was just polite. Brought his wife with him and we just hit it off, right from the getgo. He's also said it under oath by the way and identified me. And were just digging this whole notion of Jean-Claude being a Legionnaire. On this episode of Matinee Monday, Paul Scheer looks back at the "How Did This Get Made?" episode with Nicole Byer on the 1988 cult f. He tells one where he says he met Menahem Golan [a producer on Bloodsport] at a restaurant and [Van Damme] threw out his legs and blah blah blah. Bloodsport is the name of several supervillains appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. All of these versions exist in DC's main shared universe, known as the DC Universe.. I still had not yet met Jean-Claude at this time. In the end, his psyche was broken when Jimmy Olsen brought his brother onto the scene. That's how Frank and I met.Blake Harris: Do you remember what your first meeting was like?Sheldon Lettich: We hit it off right away. He was good at boxing. And then he did a kick that missed his face by like two inches. I need to tell you about something that happened first. Although there is no convenient way to verify each and every detail connected with this story, the editors have verified enough of the basic facts to feel confident in publishing it. Only the part relating to the Kumite because he was going to hang on to the rest of his rights for the rest of his "exploits" for other movies. I showed him pictures of this ancient fortress on a hilltop that the Russians had converted, so that became the basis for it. And the one twinning shot would sell it and it worked surprisingly well.Blake Harris: The next movie you worked on with Jean-Claude was his directorial debut, The Quest [1996], but only in the capacity of script polishing. KUMITE! And there'd be a bunch of people there with phones to record it, so we don't want this to happen.Blake Harris: Speaking of that screening, Frank had mentioned that you were crushed. And what really grabbed Sheldon's attention was the fights.Blake Harris: So what happened with the script? And I gotta give him credit there. Let's put Jean-Claude in. And on it he writes: To the Man Who Beat Me. I remember paying for the uniforms. And he was brought to our attention through Sheldon. Well I did, and I landed one right on his nose.Blake Harris: Really?Frank Dux: Yeah, and he was not happy about that. Okay, okay, you made your point. In fact, we all went out to celebrate. And he did the helicopter kick in No Retreat, No Surrender and I was well known for my flying kicks and finishing guys off with my spinning flying kicks. But what's crazy is almost everything he says in that interview is an outright lie or a distortion.Blake Harris: I've interviewed a lot of people in my timeincluding a lot of people I believe were trying to sell me on liesbut I never got the sense from Frank that he was trying to put one over on me. We're 60 stories in the air, I'm not kidding you. Look, I take people at face value because I'm not a bulls***ter. Originally he'd planned for it to take place in present day, but I just thought that if you've got all of these fighters coming from all of the world like they did in Bloodsportand basically he was just trying to do a different version of Bloodsportthat it would make things more interesting if, for example, this took place in the 1920s because then it becomes really difficult for all these fighters from different parts of the world to journey to this contest.Blake Harris: So Frank was originally hired to write the script for The Quest?Sheldon Lettich: Frank, and they actually put another writer on with Frank. And he was friendly to me. And apparently it did huge business. But I got over it.Blake Harris: Well, given that physically you were not a prime candidate for hand-to-hand combat, how did the idea of martial arts even first cross your radar?Frank Dux: As a kid, as a young kid, I was a James Bond fan. Tiger Tanaka, right? I said, "But I can see your view from here and how the world could look bleak." Like I'm a kook because he comes out of a James Bond movie: You Only Live Twice. And I showed that in court. A simultaneously misleading and fitting title was certainly bestowed upon Bloodsport 4: The Dark Kumite, by far the worst installment of the franchise by a longshot. Mr. Dux and I met in Tegucigalpal, Honduras, in the summer of 1985, where I was being briefed by Dux and other intelligence operatives on military targets within Nicaragua. And basically what happens is I told the story to Sheldon. Shortly after running our last piece, How Did This Get Made: A Conversation with Frank Dux, the Real-Life Inspiration for Bloodsport, I was put in touch with Sheldon Lettich. You see my point? Poison! To my face he's pretending to be my best buddy, but behind my back he's doing everything in his power to undermine me in my career and take credit for my work.Blake Harris: I'm really sorry to hear that.Frank Dux: And that's a typical Hollywood story, right? He says, "I love you. Menahem still thought it was a piece of s***.Blake Harris: How come?Sheldon Lettich: Well, I think this might answer your question. So I watched that happen and then I watched Victor Moore fight Chuck Norris.Blake Harris: Moore fought Bruce Lee and then Chuck Norris? The other thing is that Jean-Claude, like I said, he had this uncanny way he looked. You spent almost four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, is that correct?Sheldon Lettich: Yeah, I served as a radio operator in South Vietnam and then later with 1st Force Reconnaissance Company based at Camp Pendleton, California.Blake Harris: So how did you go about making that enormous transition from wartime soldier to Hollywood writer?Sheldon Lettich: Well, surprisingly enough, my first success came in the theater. And Jean-Claude's got a really good sense of how a fight scene should be edited. Why was that the case?Sheldon Lettich: Because Menahem thought it was terrible. Let's meet face to face. Later on, Lee took Grant and showed him that one of his legs was shorter than the other. Sheldon tells everybody that I told him a story of how I fought these events and he thought that would make a great movie and all this kind of stuff. You gotta admire the fact that he wanted to get a real Vietnam vet working on the script with him. And he's in this movie called No Retreat, No Surrender. As a result, he's spent the past 28 years dealing with perpetual allegations of being a fake and a fraud. I imagine that would be hard for you to prove, no?Frank Dux: Well, that part about me saying that the military ordered my record sabotaged? So flash forward ten years and I still had this notion of doing a film about the classic era of French Foreign Legion movie. Frank lost that case. I buy you dinner tonight." And I remember Mark telling us, "Menahem is thinking of casting this guy Gene Claude Van Damme. I wasn't an actor, but I was a writer, so I got in touch with John and we hit it off. 2. level 2. In 1987's Superman #4, by John Byrne and Karl Kesel, Superman tried to stop Bloodsport's rampage through Metropolis. They liked the idea, liked the script, and decided to go ahead and do it as a low-budget movie. And Leon was going to star in the movie, which we called The White House All Stars with the "White House" being a frat house at this college where all the football players lived. But to my pleasant surprise, Lettich was a complete gentleman. Hit the Subscribe button to track updates in Player FM, or paste the feed URL into other podcast apps. I met Gladys, the woman of my dreams, I had a baby, and I'm miserable. And interestingly enough, it was only after Jean-Claude did that to Sheldon that he testified on my behalf in the case for The Quest.Blake Harris: I understand. And that's one of the things that were attractive about Rambo so that's what we did with that script.Blake Harris: And what was it like working with Rambo himself?Sheldon Lettich: I was just so honored. And at the Invitationals, there's Bruce Lee. And then there's another story where he met Menahem and did it another way in Monaco. Told that the tournament was a secret, he said: "We would know. The character is initially depicted as a vengeful veteran of the Vietnam War, angry at the people of Metropolis for their "senseless . What is he, a walking dictionary of a secret society? It was done on the exact same day that Masaaki Hatsumi, Stephen Hayes and Shoto Tanemurathese are guys who think no one in the world is a ninja but them and everyone else is a fake.Blake Harris: What about some of the specific claims that the piece makes? We'd shoot one side of the screen with one of the brothers and then Jean-Claude would have to change his hair, make-up, wardrobe and we'd have a double standing in for another brother. Menahem had also seen the little 16mm movie [Firefight] I directed and was going to give me my first directing deal.Blake Harris: For you to direct a Lone Wolf McQuade sequel starring Leon Isaac Kennedy and Chuck Norris?Sheldon Lettich: Yes, except that Chuck didn't want to do it. This regular featureis written byBlake J. Harris, who you might know as the writer ofthe bookConsole Wars, soon to be a motion pictureproduced bySeth RogenandEvan Goldberg. "Frank Dux: Yeah. He kept saying, "Jean-Claude is poison!" He's been carrying on like that for years and years. I felt bad for him.Blake Harris: Actually, if you don't mind, I have one more question for you.Frank Dux: Sure.Blake Harris: We've spent all of this time talking about your life as a fighter and portrayals of your life as a fighter. Blake Harris: So we know how Sheldon entered the picture, but how does Jean-Claude Van Damme become involved with Bloodsport?Frank Dux: Oh, Jean-Claude tells this crazy story. It's a way for me to just flow. And so the ink was barely dry when I drove right over to Moshe's house and we signed a deal to do what became Double Impact.Blake Harris: From a technological standpoint, what were some of the biggest challenges with shooting two Jean-Claudes?Sheldon Lettich: The biggest challenges were that we were still using old technology. We do it your way. "We have no recollection of such a tournament," said Kenneth Wilson, a spokesman for the Ministry of Sports in the Bahamas. Unlike so many of the testosterone-fueled films of the '80s, Bloodsport holds the rare distinction of being based on a true story. And it was a Xeroxed copy of a receipt, a copy that anyone could fabricate on a home copy machine. Bloodsport. A good example of that is Bloodsport. And in that way it works, I can see that. With any film that's based on a true story, there are always questions and curiosities about authenticity. As far as, like, the choreography for how fights go and stuff. John had convinced somebody there that doing this play was a good idea for veterans. I thought Bloodsport was going to ruin my career when it was first cut and put together. In this declaration, Commander Martin attests to the following: Frank Dux: As far as my military service goes, I should also mention that I'm named as a source contributor in the US Navy SEAL SPECWAR manual. And he was just a different person. The Corsican Brothers. Well later on it comes out in court and it's a picture that they took of me on that pamphlet. I actually got to take my mother for the first time to see the film. And tears started to form in my eyes. And then there was the famous meeting between Jean-Claude and Menahem on La Cienega Boulevard. And it was painful. It's a psychological issue that, believe it or not, happens more than you would think. Thus, gladiatorial combats originally possessed a sacred significance. I think what happened in reality was more interesting, but you have a limited amount of time to tell a story and it has to resonate with the audience, you know? I genuinely believed that he believes everything he told me.Sheldon Lettich: I'd tend to agree with you on that. KUMITE! Are you kidding me? And there's a census bureau report saying that he was exactly in the place I was when he trained me. Armed with a gun that fires Kryptonite needles, Bloodsport nearly succeeded in his mission to eliminate the Man of Steel, but ultimately failed. Took me a long, long time to write that script. And I totally separated it. Do you still believe I that?" We liked the fact that we were able to do something different there. And I just want to end it right now." We just became friends almost immediately. I wrote the script, got paid a small fee and I can't remember how much time passedprobably less than a yearand via another guy named Lou Horwitza financer who, I believe, did gap-financing at the timeLou took it to Cannon. Well, she'd seen it on TV, but she was too sick when the movie came out. It was a moment where you have to sit back and realize that sometimes when you think something's wrong, everything is going right. Look, Stallone was the biggest star in the world at the time and to even have a meeting with him was, to me, a huge honor. After the fight, I go down to him and I said, "Hey, Mr. Moore, do you remember me?" And then he was inspired to write a script. It chronicles his training by a Japanese master warrior named Tiger [Tanaka]Shoto Tanemura, a Japanese who is one of a select group of recognized Ninja masters in the world, said in an interview in Los Angeles last week that he had never heard of Dux or Tanaka. One of these covert operatives was one Frank Dux. When he saw he had to walk [across] an I-beam to me, and I threw a jumping spin heel kick on the ledge of the building there, he goes: Holy shit." We were calling it "Delayed Stress." People would just assume that this is how it worked on those other two movies.Blake Harris: That makes sense.Sheldon Lettich: So I actually suggested to Jean-Claude that he use Frank Dux to write the script. Give me your best shot. In fact, I never even got story credit for it.Blake Harris: That's rough.Frank Dux: Well, Sheldon has made a career out of coming in behind me and putting his name on my work, okay? No Retreat No Surrender movie led to Van Damme getting the lead in Bloodsport (1988). So Frank and I go to a theater and we were both blown away by Jean-Claude. I remember us going back to his apartment and the thing was entirely full.Blake Harris: Did Menahem change his tune about Jean-Claude?Sheldon Lettich: Well, yes and no. KUMITE! They didn't have any proper uniforms. That editorial attributes statements to me that I never made. Jean-Claude saw Menahem on the street, did a U-Turn and said, "Hey Menahem, remember me? KUMITE! Jean-Claude, Michel Qissi and we were all predicting how much money the movie was going to make.Blake Harris: That's wonderful.Sheldon Lettich: Yes, but there was still an additional hurdle. You've gotta [in a dramatic macho voice] PUSHHIMTOOFAR. Then he said, "It's my movie too and I want what's best for the film! So he was just trying to get me in trouble.Blake Harris: What, in your opinion, was his motive?Frank Dux: Well, the thing is, the article came out on the same day that a few of my business competitors are holding a seminar. And it may be a typical Hollywood story, but you still never see it coming. Does that even look the same? Ian Fleming based his characters on real people. Enjoy, and please share and subscribe! His contract was not for writing, it was for use of his name and a portion of his "real-life story." And they weren't returning phone calls. I don't know if they ever approached Chuck Norris, but Chuck didn't seem right. The Robert DuBois version of Bloodsport made his live-action debut in the television series Supergirl, played by David St. Louis. No, never. A secret martial arts contest? In a recent documentary, Admiral Horton Smith not only acknowledges that I was a covert operative, but also states that any record of mine would have to come out of the Federal Intelligence Court. At what point along the way were his fears diminished?Frank Dux: Well it was diminished when they were going to get rid of himJean-Claude doesn't realize how close he was to never having a careerand I took Mark off to the side and I said, "Look, I'm betting it all, Mark." Plus the guy was just an idol of mine. Is that what you're telling me?Blake Harris: Right, that's why I thought it would difficult to prove (or disprove).Frank Dux: Yeah, but I'll tell you what. And one of those people was Sylvester Stallone, who had put the word out that he was looking for someone to help him write Rambo III. Two, actually. That was invented, right then and there. By their own photographer. He did everything to basically poison the well with Jean-Claude and everybody I worked with. Dux said the military ordered his record sabotaged to discredit him. he's a terrible actor. So cool, in fact, that now we have a professional basketball team called The Raptors and no one raised an eyebrow about why a team from Tornoto, Canada would be named that. So to compensate, they put me in these metal boots. But back then it sounded really cool.Blake Harris: Well you started that clich!Sheldon Lettich: [laughter] Back then, to say "based on a true story" was something that intrigued, and I think it particularly intrigued Menahem Golan. Surprised? Bloodsport wasn't an Oscar-worthy film in any manner (the original cut was deemed unwatchable and a re-edit was completed before release), but Van Damme's stoic charisma and the memorable. It's a tale so amazing that two months after the film's release, it was dismissed by the L.A. Times as nothing but a fabricated "macho fantasy." Which was Mike's move. We encountered a few phonies, but eventually we put together a core group. I used my Hebrew name: Benjamin Wolf. And then the fight was on. But then Ed Pressman, who had done Street Fighter, he wanted to do another movie with Jean-Claude. Are you guys still friendly?Sheldon Lettich: Oh yeah. Sheldon Lettich: Yeah. We're not friends [anymore] and he does everything in his power to try and paint me as being a nutball or a kook because of it.Blake Harris: That's why I wanted to focus this piece on you, so you can tell the story in your own words.Frank Dux: So now you're starting to hear the real truth of the matter, you know what I mean? One contribution I made to that script though was suggesting to Jean-Claude that he set the story in the past. Like with Legionnaire. I was afraid to taste it, because I'm allergic to shellfish. Because my idea for Rambo III was: well, there's only one place Rambo could goAfghanistan. He's not very good, of course, but the judo instructor steps in for Barney and then kicks the ass of the guy who's been picking on him. Uh, no. There's an authenticity to it.Blake Harris: Speaking of authenticity, I was wondering how much of the movie is accurate to your own life experiences?Frank Dux: Well the fighting scenes were very accurate. But Mark had permission to use his name and to basically say that this was a real story. In downtown L.A. And I go: Well, just do me a favor. These guys, after brutally going at each other, now they were just laughing it off. And they've never wavered from that.Blake Harris: The kick?Sheldon Lettich: Yeah. Why not make a budd. And we ended up settling. The Origins of Gladiatorial Games. And I walked out on the ledge and I was waiting for him because I knew he wasn't going to come alone. The Jean-Claude I knew was a person who you wanted to see win. I remember there was a stack of scripts lining the walltitles written on the spineand I notice one script in particular. I literally wrote a good majority of that script with Sheldon, but I never got credit for it. So there would be one shot where you would see both brothers in the same shot, kind of talking to one another and then all the other shots were either close-ups or over-the-shoulders done with a double. Because he's riding on the coattails of Jean-Claude. And then all the Black Dragons got around methey were like the Hells Angels of the martial arts world at that timeand I didn't know what they were going to do.
