This book is a Newbery Honor book and also has a Coretta Scott King honor. I used to say that if George Washington Carver had been alive during my childhood, he would have found a use for the blossoms on tobacco, plucked, and tossed away. The book was first published on April 23, 1997. The only reason I don't give the book four stars is because I don't think it is truly accessible for intermediate readers. Just being there helps one to get rid of littleness.Thank you, Carol. I found it both moving and informative and that is no small feat for a small book of poetry. Still, students will find much to glean from this volume and many of the poems will be perfect for reading aloud and make good monologues.
